Specialists from Sweden to speak at a sports medicine seminar

The prominent Swedish specialists were invited to take part in the seminar on sports medicine, which was held on 7th and 8th April in Kosice  Slovakia. The orthopaedic surgeon and sports medicine professor Prof. Dr. Håkan Alfredson, PhD, and first-rate physical therapists, Ulrika Aasa PhD, RPT and Björn Aasa, RPT, MaSci, whose specialization we present in the following article, both shared their expertise and practical experience.

The professional seminar, organized by the Košice-Šaca Nemocnica a.s., 1. súkromná nemocnica hospital in Košice, was attended by over 100 participants from the ranks of sports doctors, rehabilitation physicians, orthopaedic surgeons, internists and other specializations. Prof. Alfredson attended the seminar with a lecture on “Ultrasound and Doppler-guided Minimally Invasive Procedures for New Achilles and Patellar Tendinopathy”, where he presented new minimally invasive procedures in treating the Achilles’ heel and kneecap. In the lecture “Movement System Analysis in Sport Medicine” Ulrika Aasa dealt with the analysis of the musculoskeletal system in sports medicine.
The Swedish specialists were supplemented by MUDr. Róbert Rapčan, FIPP, who gave a lecture entitled “Endoscopic Surgery of the Intervertebral Disc in the Lumbar Space”, where he presented an advanced solution for the endoscopic removal of adhesions on intervertebral discs.

Hakan AlfredsonProfessor Dr. Håkan Alfredson, PhD, is a renowned international and orthopaedic surgeon and professor of sports medicine, who has been dealing with patients with injuries and accidents due to sports and exercise, including top athletes. He is one of the world’s leading consultants specializing in the treatment of chronic tendon pain. In cooperation with the University in Umeå he has conducted several years of research in this area, which has brought significant results in developing new treatment methods, especially in chronic pain in the Achilles’ tendon and kneecap (patella) and other tendons. Prof. Alfredson gained his professional specialization in the field of ultrasonic technology at the Mayo Clinic in the United States. He has been a keynote speaker at a number of international professional conferences and seminars and is involved in intensive publishing activities, which includes over 150 papers. He has worked as a doctor for the Swedish national ice hockey team and is the permanent doctor for the Färjestad BK hockey team.

Aasa BjornBjörn Aasa, MaSci, RPT is a certified physiotherapist specializing in musculoskeletal pain. He was awarded a masters degree in the field of physiotherapy at the University of Umeå. As a member of the University research team his doctoral studies involved a number of scientific projects and clinical studies, for example on the subject of rehabilitating patients with mechanical nociceptive pain, lower back pain, the importance of motor control and movement control in the evaluation and rehabilitation of patients with disorders of the musculoskeletal system or the relationship between physical activity and capacity and musculoskeletal pain. In 2015, he was awarded the “JOSPT 2015 Excellence in Research” prize from the Journal of Orthopaedic and Sports Physical Therapy in the category of scientific awards. He has devoted many years to the teaching of manual orthopaedic therapy and disorders of the musculoskeletal system. From 2009 to 2015 he was President of the Swedish Orthopaedic Manual Therapy Organisation.

Ulrika AasaUlrika Aasa PhD, RPT is an associate professor at Umeå University who gives courses about examination and assessment of faulty alignment, movement patterns, and muscle imbalances and about rehabilitation of patients with nociceptive pain. She has also published more than 20 research papers. In 2015, he was awarded the “JOSPT 2015 Excellence in Research” prize from the Journal of Orthopaedic and Sports Physical Therapy in the category of scientific awards.
