Lars Walén, M.D.


Lars Walén, M.D., is an internationally certified specialist in anaesthesiology and intensive care medicine, and leading specialist in interventional pain management with a focus on minimally invasive and endoscopic procedures. Dr. Walén’s valuable opinions and practical clinical experience are used at EuroPainClinics® to implement systems for optimal operating procedures into daily practice. He acts as an international consultant of multidisciplinary medical teams in severe and complicated medical cases associated with chronic spinal pain. Dr. Walén belongs to a group of leading experts in pain management using interventional techniques under X-ray and ultrasound guidance. He holds a Master’s degree in the field of ultrasound-guided regional anaesthesia and pain management techniques. Head physician of EuroPainClinics® in Umeå, Sweden.


Dr. Walén is a certified anaesthesiologist, intensivist and specialist in the treatment of pain in Sweden, Norway and Great Britain. After finishing medical studies, he worked as a resident and a junior consultant in a number of clinical settings in Sweden (Norrlands University Hospital, Umeå, Sunderby Hospital, Luleå). His intensive postgraduate specialization training in interventional pain therapy, regional anaesthesia and nerve blockades as well as paediatric anaesthesia and intensive care was completed in Sweden, Denmark, USA, and the UK.

Since 2007, Dr. Lars Walén has been working at Norrlands University Hospital in Umeå, Sweden, where, as a leading anaesthesiologist, he occupies one of the chief positions at the central orthopaedic operating unit. In the field of interventional pain management he focuses his competence on treatment methods and techniques of minimally invasive and endoscopic procedures. Between 2008 and 2009, Dr. Walén concentrated on anaesthesia during total surgical replacements of knee and hip joints, spine surgery, and general surgery at Shepton Mallet NHS Treatment Centre, UK.


Dr. Walén is an active member in several international organizations and institutions: the Swedish Association of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care, Scandinavian Society of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine and the European Society of Regional Anaesthesia and Pain Therapy.


Along with his medical practice, Dr. Walén is dedicated to research and extensive educational and publication activity. He is a regular participant in many international congresses, symposia and training seminars, where he is also an active lecturer. He continuously broadens his interest in the field of regional anaesthesia with a focus on ultrasound-guided nerve blocks.


Dr. Walén enjoys spending time with his children. He also dedicates his time to sports and outdoor activities.
